The traditional chi-wara represents the mythical beast that taught humanity to farm, and they are used to initiate young men into the adult farming community. My bicycle headdress celebrates the transition that children make from riding a tricycle to riding a bicycle. As adults we may not think much about it, but to a child, it is an important right of passage.
Chi-Wara Bicycle Headdress with Sprocket Beast, 2010, H: 21″ (53cm), W: 15.5″ (39cm), D: 15″ (37cm), Steel and children’s bicycle parts.
